BJJ Blueprint Series : The 5 Most Effective Ways Out of The Mount

Escape the Mount: A Jiu-Jitsu Framework

Getting stuck in the mount is a tough spot in Jiu-Jitsu. This video provides a framework for escaping, offering techniques and concepts to make the position less daunting.

Key Techniques for Escaping Mount

1. Basic Bridge and Roll Escape

• If the opponent’s hands are on the floor, trap one arm (gable grip) and foot on the same side.

Bridge and roll over into a dominant position.

2. Tracing and Stuffing the Arm

• If the opponent pulls their hands away, follow their motion.

Stuff their arm into their abdomen and perform the bridge and roll escape.

3. Weight Shifting and Hip Escape

• If the opponent shifts weight to one side to prevent the bridge, take advantage of the light side.

Shrimp towards the light side, bring the leg around, and go for a technical stand-up escape.

4. Dealing with Grapevines

• When the opponent hooks their legs (grapevine), push through the heel to kill one side.

• Step on the opponent’s other foot, remove both legs simultaneously, and elbow escape.

5. Escaping Crossed Ankles

• If the opponent crosses their ankles behind, grab their pants (if available).

Bridge and kick feet straight up (similar to removing pants while lying down).

• Transition into butterfly guard.

6. Using the Armpit Push Escape

• If the opponent gets high in the mount (knees in armpits), bridges become ineffective.

• Use a C-clamp grip in the armpits, bridge, and extend arms to create space.

• Bring feet up to replace hands and push opponent off.

Key Takeaways

• Different situations require different escape techniques.

• Understanding opponent weight distribution is crucial.

Elbow positioning is key to successful mount defense.

• Each escape requires adaptation rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
