BJJ Blueprint Series : 3 BJJ Chokes From a Standing Position

Here are three jiu-jitsu chokes that can be used while standing, as taught by Coach Tim of Independent MMA [4][8]:

* Guillotine Choke When an opponent comes in tight, giving you their head, cuff their chin, grab your wrist, come up, and pull their head down [8]. The guillotine choke involves encircling the opponent's neck with the arms, similar to a guillotine blade [1]. It can be a tracheal compression restraint (air choke) or a blood choke, depending on pressure application [1]. The technique can be applied standing or from the ground and is a defense against a double-leg takedown [1].

* Side Choke Grab the opponent's shoulder if they are trying to control you to punch. Pass under their arm, placing your bicep on their neck and bringing your hand to your bicep for the side choke [8].

* Rear Naked Choke When the opponent grabs a wrist, roll out two on one, step around while pulling, and finish with a rear naked choke [8]. The rear naked choke is applied from behind the opponent [1].
